Giant Bettas are fairly new to the fish community. They aren’t as common as they can be a challenge to breed. Giant Bettas aren’t as aggressive and territorial as the regular sized Bettas we all know and love. Because of this many breeders find that the giant males are simply too lazy and have no intention on breeding. The breeding window for the giant types is very small so naturally there are not that many out there.
Im sure your wondering how big does a giant betta really get. Well the females exceed the size of a regualr sized full grown male, on average they are 2.5″-3″. The males can get even bigger, I have some that have grown to 4.5″. I find that the average full grown size is about 3.5″-4″.
You can get giant type bettas in almost every color variation now. Most common I have seen is nemo/ koi mixes, some butterfly, and lavender mix giants.
The care for a giant is different then a regualr sized betta. They need a lot more space in a tank, and when possible a good diet of pellets and frozen proteins is best. I feed my giants once a day, they get blood worms once a week, and fast for one day to help reduce the chance of them getting bloat. For the tank size at the minimum they should have a 5.5 Gallon tank if they are the only fish. If you want to have some guppies or possible other community fish in the tank with them I would consider a 10 Gallon or even better a 20 Gallon tank.
Floating logs are a favorite hiding place for most of my giants. If you can find one at your local pet store your betta will be happy for sure. The wont eat your plants if you like the look of real plants in your tank. Also consider using a java fern or an anubias on a log in the tank. It acts as a health bacteria base when establishing a new tank, or maintaining an existing one. It will also release some tannin’s into the water, bettas really like that, tannin’s have many benefits for your fish.
